Desktop Sidebar 1.13
This versatile desktop utility offers an appealing selection of features--just be aware they take a lot of memory. At its most basic level, Desktop Sidebar lets you switch between programs or access documents more easily and efficiently, just like Windows Taskbar. But you also can transform Desktop Sidebar into a personal organizer with plug-ins such as a clock, an e-mail checker, a calendar, a stock-quote ticker, and a weather watcher. What's more, Desktop Sidebar can manage your RSS feeds and help streamline Web searches. A handy shortcut provides access to WinAmp, ICQ, and Skype. And Desktop Sidebar's active user community has developed some 50 functions, 200 skins, and 40 slide shows. Yet, as often happens with freeware, not all the features are completely bug-free. The main problem is Desktop Sidebar puts a serious drag on system functions. But if you've got plenty of RAM to spare, this is a great all-in-one utility.

Flyakite OSX 2
This gargantuan program gives your Windows XP system a makeover in a successful attempt to resemble Mac OS X. Though we were impressed with how FlyakiteOSX redesigned our system, the lengthy installation process was a big turnoff. The program lets you skin Windows XP, with its preconfigured themes and icons that change the entire look of your desktop. However, FlyakiteOSX offers only two themes and a limited settings dialog. You can opt to install more editing tools that are bundled with the program, such as ObjectDock and WinRoll. Unfortunately, you'll need to restart your PC whenever you tweak some settings. Despite some drawbacks of this freeware, we doubt you'll have any complaints with the appearance of your polished desktop.

Objectdock 1.90
Jealous of that slick Mac interface? Check out ObjectDock, a free utility that replaces the Windows Taskbar with a colorful, animated dock similar to the taskbar in Mac OS X.

Rocketdock
Where most other docks fail, RocketDock soars. The Mac-style program dock and launcher for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista has it all, from a smooth installation to flawless icon transitions and an unobtrusive footprint.

Sticky Notes
The days of cluttered physical desktops, with dozens of yellow notes everywhere, are over. There are plenty of programs to help create virtual notes, but Sticky Notes sets itself apart from the pack with its ease and simplicity.

Vista Start menu
Vista Start Menu does away with Vista's translucent aero theme, making it opaque, and builds it out with several levels of features and customization. It prevent programs from jumping around, as is their wont sometimes in the standard Vista Start menu, and it throws in a basic zoom feature accessible via CTRL Plus and CTRL Minus. It adds loads of keyboard support, so if you access the menu via the keyboard button, programs, folders, and sections of the Start menu are clearly labeled with hot-key numbers and letters.

WIndows Vista Wallpapers
Practically any image can be used as wallpaper, so choices can get overwhelming. Windows Vista Ultimate Wallpaper Series Pack offers users a chance to simplify their desktop image with a sleek Vista-themed look.

DesktopX
Everybody who uses a computer customizes his or her desktop to some degree. With DesktopX you can mold your work space any way you like. Chock-full of themes, icon manipulators, and simple programs, DesktopX gives you an unlimited number of choices to freak out your desktop.

MobyDock
The program introduces an analog of Mac OS Dock on your Desktop. MobyDock is a launch pad for any program or file. It can hold any number of items and uses magnification to clarify icons. Adding or removing an item from the dock is as easy as drag-and-drop. The program offers quite a number of customization opportunities. You can place it on any screen edge, make semi-transparent or self-hiding, change the icon size and magnification. Unfortunately, MobyDock is not extensible. There are no additional applets, only a clock and a screenshot-taking utility. Though there are more feature-packed competitors, MobyDock may be worth downloading because it is free and easy to use.
