Motorolla V8 icons

Hi: Can anyone solve this for me. I have bought a new Motorolla V8 phone. On the top left hand corner close to where you see the signal strength there is a square box.
What is this box for? Can I get rid of it?

Thats a gprs signal,if you have edge it will show letter E. Change a skin and you will change look of it.
