Default Need help getting files off a v8 with no screen please!

Hey, I've got a USB cable and a V8 with a broken screen, and I'd really like to get the images (and ideally phone numbers etc) off there before I send it to be fixed, as I'm worried it'll be returned wiped..

does anyone have any advice? The phone still works but I can't see what the buttons are doing so I can't change any settings!

    thanks
    Reuben

from what i understand, the only requirement is that the phone is in usb mass storage mode, then you can connect it, it's internal and "external" (the one that is 512m or 2g) flash pop up as drives, and you can copy _all_ user data off (the contacts should be in some of the files under .system on the internal flash, can't say for sure or which)

if the phone was already in mass storage mode, you probably wouldn't be posting tho'?
(you should have mentioned which mode it is in - what does windows recognize it as when you plug it in???)
(if it's not recognized at all, there's more than the screen broken)

if it is in modem mode, you can install the modem driver (MOTODEV > Documentation & Tools > USB Drivers for Motorola Products > Handset USB Driver for Windows) and use a terminal program to change the mode (might be easier than blindly fiddling with the menu), as documented here: Razr2 - OpenEZX

otherwise, on my phone, the keys to set it are:
(assuming you turned it on entered the sim pin, and are on the main screen)
center (menu), right, down, center (settings), 3 (connections), down, center (usb settings), down, enter (set to memory device)

then it should pop up on your computer.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write all that - much appreciated.

I tried pressing all those buttons, then connecting the phone - windows said "installing new driver software" then installed "Motorola USB Networking Driver" so it must have recognised the phone in some capacity.. Nothing else popped up and no new drives shows up in My Computer though.

I then tried opening Motorola Phone Tools, and tried to set it up as a USB cable connection, but it said that the phone was not supported. I definitly have the most up to date version of the software (tried the updater), and it's definitely a RAZR2 V8.. so I find that odd?

Also, I signed up to the MOTODEV site but it said 'access denied' when I tried to download the file you linked me to.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks again for your advice so far.

first of all i have to take back one thing: the contacts and text messages are actuallty NOT accessible when connecting the phone as an usb drive, they are stored in an area of memory not accessible that way.

actually i just noticed it's not that easy, because the location of the settings menu depends on your firmware...
the instructions i gave you were for one with t-mobile's firmware, where the settings menu is in the lower right.
try if you can remember where it is on yours...

that means the phone is in usb networking mode...
which might be the most useless mode...

UNLESS you feel like hacking into the phone linux-style... but i guess that's too complicated for you...
which would also give you access to the contacts... so it might be worth a try...
just google for motorola telnet if you feel like trying

i think motorola phone tools requires the phone to be in modem mode.
