the last idea before i am out of guesses.
is your kernel located in the same directory from where you start ./ezx-boot-usb?
if you start ./ezx-boot-usb "name of the kernel", do you see messages in the terminal of your desktop?
Hum...
This looks like a problem i had on E680 some time ago.
This may happen for 2 different reasons:
1. Discharged battery, charge your battery and it should work.
2. Have you flashed a custom firmware to your phone? Do you know it the BP firmware is still original? E680 BP behaves differently. Maybe your A780 is using a BP firmware of E680? Try to send a kernel meant for E680 (http://people.openezx.org/wyrm/images/), and report if it works. In case it works, i encourage you to flash your BP back to an A780 version. (there are other differences in kernel).
Forget my last post about the second partition.
I have exactly the same bug with mine today. I compiled a new kernel in openembedded and it freeze.
It upload the zImage but then funny colors appear and the screen goes all white. From there it just hangs.
I'll try to charge my battery and see what happends.
Update
It didnt help. I am tried booting with zImage-2.6.23-ezxdev-r0 and it booted just fine, but the kernel zImage-2.6.23-ezxdev-r1 doesent boot. So i guess there something about the latest update or something.
The zImages is both builded in OpenEmbedded with Angstrom-2008.1.
Update-2
I builded the kernel manually now, with the instruction from openezx web. And noe it starts. It's seems like it is the same kernel version. I guess it will be updated soon also in OPenembedded.
BTW, i have worked further on the Qtopia image for A780. No we have all the buttons working as it should, beside the powerbutton, i just cant figure that out. For now hitting the volume button brings up the shutdown menu.
I'll let you know when i have uploaded a new Qtopia-image.
