Lets say you have an icon with white around it. open it with photoshop. Then in the layer box on the left, right click and select convert to smart object. Then right click again and click on rasterize layer. Then switch over to the left hand tab, where you have a whole lot of option. In there, right click on the 4th icon from top, which should be in the shape of a wand, and select magic wand then simply place the cursor in the white portion of the image and click there, followed by hitting delete on the keyboard. watch the white turn to transparent

there is no option to convert it smart object it just has 'Smart Object'
