How does 3g works?

Ok this is going to be a stupid question... but... how do I get 3g on my 3g enabled phone?

Is this just a service you pay for specificly or it's included in my $20 internet data plan I have with tmobile (assuming tmobile has 3g service already)?.

Does tmobile have 3g release yet? i heard something about it testing in New York City....

it comes with the data plan.at least for cingular, if u have a 3g phone, and u within a 3g network, then it logon. or if u are not with in a 3g then u get to the next one which would be edge, and finally the crp one. either way its all slow.
