Well, if he needs to mod his phone's firmware, I think I'll recommend knoppix, imahottguy said it's easier to use knoppix when modding firmware...

First of All ... My friend, since you are new to linux, i suggest you try out A "Live" CD.

This means you dont have to install linux, it just runs from the CD.

You can either go for Knoppix (which I prefer) or Ubuntu (which others prefer)

After having a good look, move to an installation. Now here Ubuntu has a support app called WUBI which will help you avoid all the partitioning mess related with linux, and run your OS from a single file.

Search google for Knoppix, Ubuntu, Wubi or any other Unknown Terms.

And please dont go for Gentoo. The last time i used it, i had to compile the code, and that never got completed. I spent 6 hours in command prompt and was VERY Pissed off.

haha i must chuckle at the statement "latest version of linux"

i mean in comparison to the other major OSes that makes total sense.. but linux comes in Distributions in two different desktops one is called KDE and the other is called Gnome.. There are thousands of "distros" out there literally. I prefer Ubunutu, it's an "easy linux" but the easiest linux could be the hardest for all a windows user knows because linux and windows are very different.

i think u should opt for ubuntu or gentoo these too are pretty easy

and if u just want flavour of linux first then download DSL that is damn small linux file size is small and will download quickly it can giv u feel of the tux world
