In any apple is a worm. Through each window flies a bug.
That's why I take Linux, because what does not fly can not crash.

Using Archlinux these days on my laptop, mostly because I'd heard many great things about it and decided a change from Slackware would be nice, though I've been predominately a Slackware user since 99 (had a play with a lot of other distro's since then)... Originally cut my teeth on Redhat 4.2 back in about 96 or so and migrated between many distros before settling on Slackware. For the most part I don't use linux as a desktop OS anymore as I bought a Mac. I find having a Unix OS with a decent ui and many quality commercial apps as well as all the usual open source stuff covers all my desires pretty nicely.

ya.. may be because we are hosting this site.. that previous link was of some political organization's news paper. actually the name "Panchajanya" is a Sanskrit name for "Conch".. if you have time just download Panchajanya.iso from torrent link for testing and please do comment your likes and dislikes bout the OS.

  9. Talking Linux, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Mint, openSUSE Oh Yeah!!!

Well I see nobody has posted here in a couple months so here goes my impression of Linux. Thank you Linus Torvalds. He is the founder of Linux. I am so grateful to him. Let me first say I did not give up Windows, hell I like playing with them too, back to I have Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Seven. The last three all on one desktop tri-booting. I will eventually add 1 or 2 linux distros to the same desktop.

I currently have installed in my house these distros:

    desktop:
Ubuntu, Xandros, MyahOS, PCLinuxOS, TinyME, and PC/OS

    laptop 1:
Ubuntu, Mint, openGEU also Widows XP

    laptop 2:
    Mephis, Windows XP and Vista

I have also had PCLinuxOS, Kubuntu, openSUSE Zenwalk, and Ulteo on at least one of these laptops at one time or another. Yes they all had wireless working and sound. Wireless is usually the biggest setback of any distro but almost all of these went on with very little work getting wireless to work even without NDIS wrapping them.

If you haven't figured out already I am a hopper. I like almost all of the Linux flavors. Linux is like chocolate to me. There is no chocolate I don't like.

When I set up a machine for family or friends I use Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and PCLinuxOS. Why, because they are in my opinion the easiest to get used to and get familiar with. So far none have come back and complained they were too hard or too confusing. After you get your feet wet then you can try some others like, Mint, openSUSE, Sabayon, Mandriva, Mephis, Gentoo, and Debian.

I don't get hung up on KDE vs Gnome. They both their strengths and weaknesses. If You just have to a machine that looks and works like Windows then take 1. PCLinuxOS, 2. Kubuntu and 3. openSUSE in this order to match windows style and looks.

If you want to try something different try Ubuntu, Zenwalk, openGEU and Mephis, OpenGEU and Mephis look more like Apple's desktop.

So here is my top ten:

    1. Ubuntu and PCLiunxOS tied
    2. Mint
    3. openSUSE
    4. Kubuntu
    5. Mephis
    6. openGEU - best looking Linux but more complex to use
    7. Sabayon
    8. Xandros
    9. Zenwalk
    10. Mandriva

others I have also ran live or installed are, Fedora, Debian, CentOS, Momonga,
Gentoo. Dreamlinux, Elive, Berry, ZevenOS, Parsix, LinuxXP, Freespire, Linspire, Ulteo, and Pioneer.

I have also tried FreeBSD and other BSD editions but haven't cared for them much. Before I get bashed for not putting Fedora in my top ten it was the first one I tried way back about 9 or 10 years ago when nothing worked with it like USB and most printers so there was not a lot a PCer could do with it but it started my fascination with Linux. SUSE and Mandrake now Mandriva were around but you had to pay for them unlike Redhat which was free to download. Over the last couple of years I ahve noticed a trend that people who like the Debian based distros like Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint usually don't care for the Fedora based distros like Fedora Core and Centos. I don't think it is like Chevy vs Ford it is they just have a different feel when you are using them. They do things differently.

Sorry if this post is too long, told you I love linux. Don't get me started.
