Default problem using ubuntu telnet to e680i

Any one success telnet to E680/i via ubuntu 5.1 (Breezy, 2.6.12-9-386)?
I'm not sure whether this Breezy kernel have patch usbnet or not, but
dmesg shows that everything look fine.

I'm plugging the phone in Modem mode
    The message seems okay.

Then I run the script to enable usblan

    This is my current ifconfig

I'm not sure whether I have to ifconfig as ...
    sudo ifconfig usb0 169.254.142.1 netmask 255.255.0.0 up
    or
    sudo ifconfig usb0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

but both give the same error
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host

I found some post recommend using LeoPPP. Do I have to use Bluetooth Hub in order to use LeoPPP? I do not have one
