As far as I know many have asked this but I don't know if anyone has tried it to see if it works. The only way to find out is buy & try.

why surf wifi when you have a laptop or desktop for that ? The mobile devices of this magnitude are not meant for wifi imho. That's what PDAs are for hehe.. I think surfing in Edge or GPRS is fine =)

I agree Edge GPRS is fine for me, but depending on service provider it can get expensive. I'm with Cingular & have unlimited media net (unlimited thats funny) Cingular told me that excessive use like using my phone to connect my Laptop, or downloading large files, I will be charged extra. Thats not unlimited to me, if I'm paying for unlimited thats what I should get.

Who told you? a Rep? they can't do that, I've seen nothing in the fineprint that says they can charge me extra for teathering. Have they done it?

i had the same question when i went on a trip and i needed internet, so i called the toll free customer service number and cleared it all up, the rep i talked to actually had to go to a higher authority to confirm that i wouldn't get charged anything for using my phone as a modem. turns out a lot of these cingular reps don't know jack about jack, your best bet is to review your contract and if you still have questions, call the toll free customer service number and be sure to document your call, so you can refer to that if you do get overcharged

No they haven't charged me extra yet. When I added the media net package, I asked about connecting my laptop, thats when they told me.

I'll call them see what they say. Most the time I can pick up wifi connection but if not I will use my media net to connect. If I'm using the phones connection settings I don't see how they would know I was surfing on my laptop.

Haha Jack about Jack, get it Cingular jack.. haha that was good

The only way they can tell is when you have high data usage, which for a business person is possible w/o teathering

On the plan I get for working for Cingular, I used 80MB last month, and thats pretty light usage for me, I'm on my email and bank account daily, and I teather whenever I got to my vacation home, as Edge is faster than the Dialup there.

I'm one of those few reps that has quite a bit of knowlage, then again I got 16 hours of training before I hit the sales floor, Since we're the biggest Authorized Retailer on the west coast, we have pretty high standards, even higher than COR locations. and I work in a 10x10 booth in the middle of the mall (Stonestown in San Francisco if you want to come get a phone from me, if you say malibu they'll know what you're talking about lol shameless plug!) But if you goto Cingular.com/device-support, and choose a device, it will actually give you step by step instructions on how to teather.
