Thread: Motorola iDen

    Default Motorola iDen

Is anybody interested in going down the path of Linux on iDEN phones?

This could include the Eagle, Condor, and Falcon series (basically all of them). Software is available to download, and/or re-flash the devices.

I dont know much about low-level programming stuff, but it seems like it might be kind of easy to get started with some text-only Linux and start building from there. (I would be geeked to work on such a project). I just dont know where to start - like how to get a boot loader on there, or how to even compile it.

There is a ton of free space in NVRAM so anybody that is familiar with assembly could suggest a way to insert a "jump" to custom code which we could put anywhere in the open NVRAM area. There's like 8+MB of free space in the code area, etc. Just dont know how to get the code there, or insert a jump.

These phones are pretty easy to come by and it seems like tons of people have them. Some have camera, color screens, Sirf GPS module, SIM, lots of NVRAM to play with (like 32-64 megs i think), etc.

Just wanted to throw this out there for any developers that are interseted.

I messed around with this today for a while. Depending on the architecture this could be either really easy (like ARM) or really not easy (MCore?)

Does anybody know what architecture is running on iDEN Phones? I opened one such phone up but the CPU is sealed in a RF shield, and I didn't feel like destroying the PCB just to get a look at the CPU. hmm.
