    Default Gnome on an A780?

Has any body seen this? http://www.maemo.org/

Do you think it would be possible to port it to the E680i/A780?
Still bleeding from the cutting edge....

i'm not too sure about the maemo environment, but it should be possible to get gnome based stuff to work. Check out the GPE environment (maybe start with the openembedded stuff); it is a X/Gnome based enironment for zaurus's and ipaqs. Since others have had success getting opie to work on the phone i think it should be posible to get GPE to work as well. Alternatively, I have been playing around w/ X/Qt (an X server that runs on top of the qt environment) and it appears that there are gnome-based apps (e.g. xmms) that will work w/ X/Qt.

what do you mean by best? what are you comparing it to? have you tried apps from the "PDAXrom"?

PdaXrom makes sense on my 640x480 Zaurus with keyboard, but I'm not sure if it would be the obvious choice for the E680.

where did u get the x/qt libraries from ? are u developing it for the phone so it runs on the phone? wouldnt u need a cross-compiler for xscale for that ?
have u succesfully created something ? or any small demo program that i can test ... if its really easy to create graphics on it.. i WOULD LOVE to create it...

please give me some feedback on it.. i have never used X/QT but can learn it pretty quick..

    thanks

a summary of what i have gotten working w/ X/Qt can be found here: http://www.www.motorolafans.com/inde...ewtopic&t=1207
(PM me if you are interested in either the opie_X.cramfs or my hacked source package).

i'm using the cross-compiler from leprechaun's guide and was able to get the main server, xeyes and twm to work. Other binaries seem to be compiled okay (e.g. xterm) but i get errors when it tries to load certain resource files.

thanks for a quick turn around. ok before i even go into details i will ask u by explaining what kinda graphics i am interested in. i want to be able to create a graphics such as below
    1. attach a background Image file (jpg, png or watever)
    2. create buttons or plain text in front of the image so that the image is still visible at the back at buttons or text appears to be on it...
    3. make this text or button clickable ofcourse.
    4. on clicked event, create a new page or form that leads to a new image etc...
    5. use somekind of checkbox's or radio buttons etc... ?

is all this above possible to create with x/qt cos currently i do it in MIDP but then to talk to my native c++ i have to communicate over the socket.. with x/qt i think i can make it one stream line .. so no native daemon needs to be invoked seprately... ?

    waitin for ur feedback
    thanks

although i'd like as much help/interest w/ the X/Qt stuff that I can get, given the current state of X/Qt and what you are trying to do, it sounds likeputting together a qtopia/opie app would be a better option.

you are welcome to anything i have for the X/Qt stuff, but if i was starting such a project i think i'd start w/ example apps that come w/ opie and or a qtopia package and compile them against the patched qte libs from cyph's package; eventually you should be able to build an app that you can either launch from the opie application launcher, or one that can run in stand-alone mode using cyph's opieproxy stuff.

when i have a chance today i will do some digging to see what kind of example apps are available from opie/qtopia; i thought i remember seeing one that was similar to the MIDP example apps (i.e. including a radio button, check box, guage, etc.)

I would be interested in this option as well; i just got my first j2me app running for BT communication, but i am using cytux's method of writing shell commands to an rms record and using his daemon to parse the record and execute the command. here again an opie/qtopia app could access the OS and filesystem directly. i know cytux mentioned that a signed midlet has greater system access, but i need to look into this more.....

when i find out more about example qt/opie apps i will let you know.

Thanks. Yes u r ryt. i read on Trolltech site a bit and qtopia is what is required... n i guess using Cyphs patch i should be able to compile ...

that would be sweet. one thing though. how much space does it require to get opie installed on the phone. i dont have an SD.

yeh i know the BT thing u were working on ... i read that thread.. good job on that. yup signed midlet can do alot but unfortunately only companys with a good meaningful applications can get it signed otherwise its very hard to get it from motorola....i would be surprised if neone gets it !! even for a company its very hard !
