    Default USB data mode failure

    Hello all,
I have flashed my phone to the latest and greatest firmware (Chinese) and updated that with the hacks. Finally I installed the I, robot theme.

All was (and is) well until I try and use the usb port in data mode. Locks the phone up hard, and not once in a while, EVERY TIME.

I'm at my whits end. Suggestions?

I have looked in lots of places, but really havn't seen anything to suggest anyone is having a problem as severe as mine.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    P.S.
Is the latest unbranded firmware available?

When using that theme, you must change theme when putting it into USBLAN mode. Another solution would be to install USBMode, EZXSysInfo or firmware hack to enable auto telnet when phone is in "Modem" mode. Most of these cool themes will not work with "USBLan" mode but there are workarounds.

Arggg. Ok, I get it. I will try a different theme and then move forward.

Just so we are clear, this happens when I try to use the phone as a usb storage device.

    Thanks,
    Matt

That's exacly what I am talking about. You don't have to use a different theme. Just install USBMode or EZXSysInfo and leave your phone is Modem mode. Then use either of those programs to put your phone in USBLAN mode. You can access the SAMBA share by going to \\169.254.142.2\system or telneting to that ip address. I map a drive to \\169.254.142.2\system. You can access your transflash data under the mmc\mmca1 folder.

Thanks so much!! Completely sorted out...

Now I need to figure out which is truly the latest firmware for my non-gps phone with all the goodies. I really wish people would differentiate between the non-gps and gps firmwares. It looks like there is some gps bias based on the download section.

I think I may have actually gone backwards on accident.

    Ohh well, works well enough.

    Thanks again,
    Matt

    P.S.
Has anyone figured out P2P or SIP in the U.S.?

I haven't played around with SIP or P2P. The latest firmare is 76 for GPS and 42 for non GPS. However 42 is branded China Mobile RED. Very ugly. Regardless of GPS or not, I would upgrade to 74 or 76.

Here, for me anyway, is where the confusion lies: Is the copilot software loaded and if so, doesn't it get in the way? If for no other reason isn't it taking up space I could use for apps like qonsole and the like?

Being a good unix ludite, I am wary of software which does nothing or shouldn't do anything on my machine.
So now I have a tiny computer, which has no gps, and you are suggesting that I should load a version which has software I do not need and cannot use?

f0x0r, if you tell me that there are no real concerns here, I will gladly do that. But I may wet myself in the process.

Also, does samba start by itself, or do I need to fire it up somehow?

Thanks again for all the info,
    Matt

Samba starts itself when you put the phone is USBLAN mode.

The software doesn't get in the way and it doesn't take up much space. You can still install many apps. And if you want a bit of advice, I would install ALL of your apps on your transflash card. This will keep your phone memory clean and also when you flash your phone you won't have to re-install all of your applications and games.

eKonsole is better than Qonsole IMHO.

If you are a good unix ludite, After flashing to the latest firmware, learn how to mount your own cramfs and manually remove CoPilot from the rootfs and reflash it to your phone. If you did this I would share it with the rest of the Motorola Fans community as I am sure there are others out there that would love this removed from their non GPS phones.

I was thinking about that. I guess I will have make that yet another project I would like to complete.

    Thanks,
