FIRMWARE extensions: What is .smg .shx .hs .pcf

As I am planning to upgrade my A780 ASIA version.

I would like to know

What do these extensions stand for ?
shx, smg, pcf, hs, pcf.

Which tool support smg AND HOW TO UPGRADE?

when to use what extension and which tools can be used for what.

Currently I have
R52_G_od.50.AEP
BP:
R52_G_OD.39.B1P ( I have version 39)
BPFLEX:
GCOA780000SA061
DSP:62252500

I see lot of firmwares having different versions(39,41,61,74,76) and also the
firmware are specific to different Geos. Also these firmware comes with different extensions(shx,smg).
I also know that there are different tools to upgrade or flash(flashkit, PST, Multiflashflex).
I got to know that I need to upgrade to intermediate firmwares(41->61->74) before I can move to 76.

I managed to get version 41 74 and 76.. I am unable to get 61. Any pointers where I can get 61version(asia)

Any inputs pointers will be greatly appreciated
