Thread: known problems

  1. Default known problems

i haven't found a "know issues" section yet on this site, and thought that it maybe rather useful for people, so they dont have to search and read all forums.

Here is my 1st one, titled "USB Resets on A780".
After waiting on the phone for some time, many times with a company called "Right Now" who apperently does the rather incompetent support contract for Motorola, i was referred to a local repair centre and they confirmed that the sept 2005 version of the A780 has major USB connectivity issues.
The phone just disconnects the USB {disks} after a few minutes and instantly activates them again, and it keeps doing that, driving my poor ibook crazy with the filesystems that come and go.
also, when the USB cable is plugged in the battery indicator starts flashing with 2 bars power left, the moment i pull the cable it goes back to normal, "fully charged".

    Often when Trying to copy files one way or the other the a780 just freezes/hangs, and i've to take out the battery and put it back in again to get it back to life.. {seems to have something todo with file_locks}
all rather a pain in the back when all i want is to make a backup of the files on the phone..

i just got the phone and am reading up on it and collecting stuff for it as much as possible. and will add the firmware version to this article the moment i find out how to get it

so i'm a novice with this phone, but not with unix and microelectronics, and i really hope to tame this toy and turn it into a nice little helper.

    Cheers

    Ps.
whats a good place to find old&new firmware for this phone ?
most referred URL's in the forums are to registered or pay sites.. and none have a collection of them, so i can try some..

For those who will instantly say "its the stupid mac causing this!"

    i must correct you..
    i've tried it on my ibook[powerpc], winxp[intel box] and freebsd[Geode SC1100].
i've also returned my 1st a780 and got a new one off the shelf.
and still the same USB houdini "now is there, now its not" trick keeps happening.

    Cheers

Ps. yes,, the ibook is rather stupid, but stupid creatures also deserve some attention and group hugs.
