Default Open EZX and original EZX software

I don't wanna post this in the open-ezx--devel mailing list, I think this is a more Proper place to post.

My question is that if when open-ezx will be up and running, we will be unable to run normal EZX apps (Copilot live, for examplt) or it will be possible to have both types of apps.

    regards.

I think it is possible to run Linux-apps in open-ezx.
    Copilot is a Linux-programm.

yes, but that's not exactly what i mean

Of course copilot is a linux program, but it needs some propietary librarys: mainly EZX and Qt, that are propietary libs.

Because of legal or technical issues, it may be possible that Open-EZX does'nt include such librarys and so, making Copilot or the rest of the software that actually runs on the phone unusable.

    that's what I meant

i think it should be possible. you can always place necessary libs in another location (example transflash) and set LD_PRELOAD variables to use them instead of system libraries. this is dynamic linker tricks.
i cannot suggest when openezx will be available. it's just the beginning without visible end

i don't think it would be that much of a loss if the few programs motorola has allowed to be written for the existing operating system on the a780/e680(i) didn't work any longer. look at it this way: as soon as a free operating system runs on the a780 (which is now the case), someone will start developing a GUI for it, and as soon as that's reached a certain stage, there are a lot of people who'd like to write software for it (me included). i can picture this being done in about six months, provided the developers at openezx (and whoever decides to work on the gui) have enough spare time to do the work in.

surely, calculator and some other minor apps will not represent a great loss.

But copilot is another universe... I use it very often. I dont think that there will be a good replacement app for copilot in the opensource universe. An openEZX without copilot would be not much interesting for me. Copilot is a killer app for the phone

Anyway, recently openezx is moving faster and it seems that it would be possible to have both environments and start one or another

    regards

there are a number of free software programs which offer more functionality than copilot, which is itself quite basic. the killer ap for the a780 would a fully functioning gnome desktop or similar. can you imagine having open office, firefox, thunderbird, the gimp, not to mention blender, povray, mysql client and server, etc. etc. running on your phone? you would just need a bluetooth keyboard and an external monitor (to be connected over usb) and then you'd have a full valued computer. that is the level of functionality the openezx project promises to bring.

in my best case scenario, for example, i would be able to connect a usb sound card to the a780 and record sound using audacity (or ardour) on the phone.

what would you do with yours?

According to what I have read: The Usb of the phone could only be used as a client and not as a host. For the host part of the usb controller of the processor is connected to the phone's bp.

I only bought the phone because I saw the openezx project.
Wherever the project go, I am certain it would only make a good phone better. The concept of running a pure opensource distribution of linux on a phone with great hardware is something I just could not let pass.
I could not live without windows... just because games for PC are mostly for windows.
