I haven't been able to flash this yet because the A780 isn't detected.
Here is what I did so far (Win XP SP2):
1.Install PST 7.2.3. including running the patch
2.Switch to modem mode on the phone
    3.Plug in the USB cable
4.Win installs the p2k driver (whatever that is)
5.Start PST, "connecting to Motorola phone"
6.Connection not successful (icons for reading/writing to/from the phone greyed out)
The COM port settings seem to be OK.
    Some advice would be appreciated.

Check device manager, there should be a whole shitload of new devices, if so its ok, otherwise if there's just a motorola usb modem youve done something wrong. Also you shouldnt start pst, but the multiflashflex.exe program in the pst folder.
Yes, but does it run Linux?

Press down both the Jog dial Button on the left side of the phone and the camera button on the right.......

while holding both those buttons press the power button at the same time...

Thanks. Works. Unfortunately, it appears as an unknown type of USB device while in bootloader. Was hoping it would appear as a serial ACM device with a console on it. I guess the way to get to such console is using a windows driver and the PST program, right ?

By the way, I don't see PST in the download section. Is it available somewhere on the net ?

No you wont get a serial console out of it, the bootloader mode is for reflashing with Motorola's own PST software.

Got it. (Ver 6.7). Will give it a try now (from inside vmware - I hope motorola don't violate the USB protocol too much).

Will reflashing only affect the filesystems stored in /dev/roflash*, or some of the other filesystems as well ?

I'd also like to preserve my current flash so I'll be able to go back. However, /dev/roflash* cause a segfault, an oops, and sometimes a full-blown kernel panic. Nice coding

So how do you backup your firmware before reflashing ?

All filesystems, it will completely wipe out your phone, make sure to have a backup of Phone book and calendar etc. You can backuo your fw with dd, look for cyph's thread in Development, somewhere on the last page. To be honest i dont think Vmware will work, but you can always try.
