I'm sure I'm 90% wrong but here's my opinion (please correct who knows)

AP is application firmware. it's what you see after upgrade, new applications, better speed, fixed bugs and so on. it's linux
BP firmware I'd call radio firmware. it should be smaller than AP. it should have separate processing unit, controls internal phone functions, radios, gsm, gps, gprs.
