    Hi Mischka,

my FW is R542_G_11.61.21R BPFLEX with Chinese fonts.
I would love to have a German keyboard and throw out the Chinese stuff - how can I do that?

I think you have to flash your phone for it. For now I updated the links for my modded yan0 53p version.
I want to make this with a newer version soon but please don't ask how soon

you can download the one with german modded english keyboard (incl ßäöü) there

the Links there will work I just updated them

    Hi Mischka,
I would like to try your FW on my A1600.
It took me since February 09 to figure out why I couldn't connect to any PC. Including suspicion it is a fake one - but it isn't.
Eventually Motorola Hong Kong repaired my USB on warranty and I am looking forward to handycraft the phone I want.
Do you have a newer FW version by now?
My actual one is R542_G_11.61.21R which seems newer than yours. Does it matter?
I would need a German keyboard, wouldn't mind a Russian too - and - if possible - a working GPS.
If I knew how to mod, I would try to find the components and tinker one myself.
But so far I don't get throught the jungle.

Don't make yourself any illusions - apart from the good design, good components and excellent sound,
its performance is about 2005 standard (when I had my first 3G phone!).
Forget about the GPS - it works only in Asian countries, and only if there are motorola maps available.
No cooperation of the GPS with 3rd party software. I also couldn't get a Motorola T805 GPS mouse to work.
Voice recognition is a joke - e.g. when I ask to tell me the time, it tries to call someone from my phonebook. It just doesn't understand proper English.
What else - the phonebook app is awkward, searching is available either for first OR last names - depending what is first in your settings.
There is no global search app. The jog dial acts differently in each application, intuitive operation is a foreign word for the A1600.

I would have expected either a well developed phone or at least an open platform, so modders can get it right - neither is the case.
The Linux OS is crippled and not accessible, it runs only Java apps, only very few of the ones available.
Therefore my Chinese system has some preinstalled rather last millenium arcade games (on a designated BUSINESS PHONE).

Motorola's politics are hard to understand, to develop 5 quite similar, but yet different models
(A1200, A1600, A1800, KRAVE, A1210) instead of making one really well and then upgrade it.
The A1200 was a very promising start.
The current models distinguish from each other rather by lacking something, than having a specific purpose.
Very sad and a waste of the really good design. I wish the designers to get a job at another company and pick up where they left off.

I wouldn't recommend it, except you are a keen modder (I am waiting for one!).

    Hi Mischka,

I tried several OS versions and will stick for now with an Indian one:
    R542_G_11.62.03R
It has no games & no branding, it has English & Russian UI, types and keyboard, it would be nice to write in German too.
It also features SUI (for the ones who don't know: a simplyfied Java UI for the phonebook/dialer), which comes handy when you want to make a call in a crowded bus without loosing your stylus.
I want to join the league of modders and will try to insert other language adaptations.
I appreciate all hints, I am not a programmer, but usually learn by trial & error (trying to avoid the latter).
    Thanks in advance,
