    if i download using my cable internet.. co incidentally from AirTel itself.. i get upto 22KB/s too..

    so.. is this what i should be getting.. or is anyone else getting higher speeds too ??
    Dude, trust me we are surfing and downloading both on mobile and pc at more than 21KB/s (upto 27KB/s)

    1) Your handset must have EDGE (look for manual)
    2) Your network singal strength should be full
    3) It all depends on your handset, that how many channels (actually called timeslots) out of 8 channels of GPRS are connected with the tower at that moment.

    The speed may vary but EDGE is stable and does not gets disconnected even when phone call comes. Incoming call can disconnect Internet in some handsets as the required timeslot is used by voice call. My ming does not disconnects net but download slow-down to 10kb/s or even lesser.

    ===============================================
    Dude these days (Oct 2007) if you are getting 22kb/s download on your Airtel Cablenet then dude its time to change your ISP. We get at least 27-30KB/s on 256KBPS line here in Mumbai by HATHWAy cablenet

    My 300KBPS Reliance Broadband is giving me 35-40 KB/s download at any time. Check if you are using shared or dedicated connection.

    PLEASE NOTE: Speed slowdown also occurs because you get 1:4 plans in CableNet. This means if you are using 256 KBPS internet, your ISP setups your download speed at 256KBPS but upload is 64KBPS. BLOODY IDIOTS. I had to pay extra to get 1:1 ratio internet and speed increased. This is applicable to EDGE also. According to airtel EDGE page they use 4 slots for Download and only 2 slots for Upload

    Look for following line
    GPRS/ EDGE Multi slot Class 10 (4 slots Rx, 2 slots Tx, 5 max active)
    on this page.
    http://www.airtelworld.com/level2_t3...path=1/106/179

    Here Rx mean Recieve Transfer (download) and Tx means Send Transfer (upload).

    Hope lots of things are cleared with you. May be I am lucky using MODDED MING and good speed with edge.

    thanks for all the info..

    mine is E6.. so i guess its 10 slots [ Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps] .. and i have modded it to get EDGE..

    Now for the cable net.. the one i was talking about is being shared by approx 22 terminals.. its a 256kbps connection .. in my office.. so i think the speed i get is good enough..

    Have been paying 999 + tax for unlimited 256 (1:4)
    Rs. 1700+tax for (1:1) or less.
    and its around 1200 for (1:2).

    This Cablenet is cost is for Home users only at Mumbai. This plan is not available for offices.

    Your Pacenet cost it good. but few of my clients at Vileparle and Santacruz are always scolding this connection for bad service. Its slows down or completely down at evening (after 4pm till late night) Where do you live?

    I wondor how come you did not check in the prices of Data-Services in www.airtelworld.com (mobile section)

    The direct link is http://www.airtelworld.com/Level2_t3...th=1/6/7/10/15

    GPRS SERVICE NO.1 : Mobile Office

    Activate by sending "GPRSACT" to 222
    Deactivate by sending "GPRSDEACT" to 222

    Settings will download on your mobile automatically and you need to select the proper Data-Services in connection setup in your mobile.

    Following table table is extracted from the same site and is for POSTPAID CONNECTION
    Monthly Rental___Free Usage
    Rs 399/-_________100 MB
    Rs 599/-_________1 GB
    Rs 799/-_________1.5 GB
    Usage charges after FREE Usage 10 Paise/10 KB for all plans

    As I already told earlier that MOBILE OFFICE is Rs.15 per day at this moment for PREPAID CONNECTION.

    =============================================
    GPRS SERVICE NO.2 : Airtel Live

    A GOOD NEWS TOO FOR AIRTEL LIVE (FREE DATA-SERVICES (GPRS))

    Airtel Live was only a limited link WAP portal when it was introduced. Only Airtel's WAP page was visible and few downloads were available. No other sites were possible to browse.

    But now AirtelLive is a PARTIAL GPRS and you can browse all sites with this connection. Earlier it was not available, now you dont need to suscribe for Data-Services for a fixed rental.

    For both Prepaid and Postpaid connection service is available and YOU CAN BROWSE NET ON YOUR PHONE BROWSER at 20 paise/10kb. Do not enable if MO is already enabled. This is now PAY-AS-YOU-USE service which is good for occassional visitors. You dont need to pay daily or monthly rent. Just enable AIRTEL LIVE and use INTERNET on PAY-AS-YOU-USE basis. If dont use it no charges unlike monthly committment plans like MO and other providers.

    Activate by sending "LIVEACT" to 222
    Deactivate by sending "LIVEDEACT" to 222

    Settings will download on your mobile automatically and you need to select the proper Data-Services in connection setup in your mobile
    ====================================
    GPRS SERVICE NO.3 : Airetel NOP (Net on Phone)

    A GOOD NEWS TOO FOR GPRS USERS (UNLIMITED INTERNET ON ONLY PHONE, NOT ON PC/LAPTOP)

    Now in MUMBAI too Airtel NOP (GPRS on phone) is available and you can browse all sites with this connection with unlimited download. Earlier it was not available in Mumbai, at a fixed rental Rs.2 per day (Rs.60/month)

    For Prepaid connection this service is available and YOU CAN BROWSE NET ON YOUR PHONE BROWSER. You cannot use your phone as MODEM for browsing on PC/LAPTOP.

    Activate by sending "NOPACT" to 222
    Deactivate by sending "NOPDEACT" to 222

    Settings will download on your mobile automatically and you need to select the proper Data-Services in connection setup in your mobile

    ================================================
    NO NEED TO MAKE CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS AS I AM ALREADY USING ALL THREE SERVICES ON MY SEVERAL AIRTEL SIMCARDS. I AM NOT AIRTEL ADVERTISER. I HATE AIRTEL FOR INCREASING GPRS COSTS FROM RS.7 PER DAY TO RS.15 DAY WHICH HAPPENED JUST LAST MONTH. IF ANYTHING WRONG I WILL KICK HARD ON AIRTEL A-S-S TOO, HARDER THAN YOU CAN THINK. SO TAKE MY ARTICLE AND OPINIONS AS NUETRAL.
    ================================================
    SOME FACTS ABOUT AIRTEL MOBILE OFFICE (MO) AND AIRTEL LIVE (AL) AND AIRTEL-NOP (NOP)

    1) All are available for Postpaid and prepaid connections.

    2) All are EDGE Enabled in most areas and even available in outstation. In any case the basic GPRS is always available.

    3) Airtel's GPRS is much more stable than other providers.

    4) MO : You can browse on phone and on pc too (pc connected to mobile with cable/bluetooth/IR etc)
    AL : You can browse in phone but cannot connect pc to phone to browse on pc. May be some workaround or cheat (trick) is available somewhere, but airtel do not office officially.
    NOP: Only on phone not for pc/laptop thru phone-modem feature.

    5) MO: You can use EMAIL application directly in your mobile for Emailing.
    AL : You cannot use Email application in your mobile.
    NOP: You can check web-mails in browser, not in EMAIL application installed in phone.

    6) Warning: If you have Mobile Office enabled in your phone setup your all browsers to MO as default Data-Connection. DO NOT BROWSE with AIRTEL LIVE as default data-connection in your Browser setting. Otherwise Airtel Live will take money from you at 20paise/10kb, though you are already paying for MO. Its funny but I have Mobile Office and Airtel Live both activated and accidentally lost some money as browsed with Airtel Live.

    7) Use Google maps and Google earth on your own risk and both take too much download and you may be charged high. visit http://www.google.com/gmm The free JAVA software from google can exahust your internet download limit. This is google map software with in-built Google Earth (satellite option). Recommended for Unlimited plans only.

    ====================================================================

    Hope all this is helpful to all

    C Mahendra

    Edit: Airtel NOP information updated on 18-2-2008.
