New firmware and other questions

So, I've decided to buy the A1200 and I am picking it up today. I just have a few questions regarding the phone. I'm a definate newbie when it comes to modding the phone. I used to have an E398 with the old firmware, it was extremely slow, so I have a few questions about the A1200.

1. How do I check the phone to see what firmware it has?

2. What is the best one to have and what are it's advantages?

3. If I update it, where can I find an idiot's step by step guide to updating it?

4. I have a Intel based MacBook Pro and a PC. Which would make the process easier?

Thanks for any help. I know most or all of these questions are probably in this forum, but I figured if I can get all of these questions answered in one place it would make it easier for me.

welcome i used 2 b the same way u can check firmware by dialing www008w go to the keypad the top right corner and in the left corner press the button go to insert go to insert wait thats how u get the w as for firmware check which one u have first post it here then we could make suggestions

My firmware version is .44P.
Which firmware should I upgrade to?
Do you know where to get the desired firmware?
Currently my phone allows me to write chinese characters. Do the latest firmwares allow that?

I'm not sure I'm the one to ask about that! But in looking on this site it seems that there's plenty of info on what firmware is the best. I was just a bit lazy. I'll keep my eye out for a step by step guide in installing the firmware. I figure if I find one that I can understand then everyone would be able to underdstand it.

Thanks for your great help!
I just upgraded my firmware from .44p to .08p.

I used RSD Lite 2.8 but it did not prompt a "completed" message when it's done. So I actually flashed my phone 3 times before I realised it. At the end, I unplugged the phone and took out the battery. Then restarted the phone and it worked well.

Before I flashed my phone, I lost my address book and had viewing problem for Tasks and Calendar, and sometimes the phone hung. I tried 'Master Reset' and it did not work.

Now all is well.

What are the differences between 44 and 08? I have 44 myself and am trying to make a dump of it(for safe measure) then will try out the custom ones. Whats a program that can dump A12's FW?
