Nice Guide useful1.....Thanks for sharing
Hello everyone.
Long time forum lurker and proud owner of the Motorola Ming A1200.
I picked up the phone years ago, but never really used it to its full potential.
Today, I finally set up the phone as a USB modem, and just wanted to share
how to do it over T-Mobile, in case anyone else wants to. Just to avoid the frustrations I did.
What you need:
--------------------
Hardware:
- Motorola Ming A1200 (I used the original vanilla version)
- USB Cable
- PC or Laptop with USB (I used a laptop)
Software
- Motorola Phone Tools aka MPT (I used Motorola_Phone_Tools_v5.0)
You can find the .zip file somewhere on this site
Phone Service:
- All Phone Plans minus Pay As You Go
- Data Plan (T-Mobile Smartphones Plans)
--------------------
Step One (Clear all other profiles on the phone to avoid confusion):
- Turn On Phone
- Click the Menu Button at the top left corner of the screen
That should bring up the icons for all the applications
- Tap the Setup Button
- Scroll Down to Data Network
- Click Data Network
Internet Profile Page appears
- Delete all profiles on the page
(You dont HAVE to delete all your profiles, Im just recommending it because
well, its a pain in the butt to remember while profile is which)
Step Two (Clear all other profiles on the built in browser):
Note: My browser on this phone is called Monternet, I picked up
the chinese version, so it might be called something different.
- Tap the Menu button on the top left corner of the screen
- Tap the browser icon, Monternet
This opens the browser
- Tap the three lines on the button right corner of the screen
- Tap Setup
Which brings up another menu
- Tap Profiles
Profiles screen appears
- Delete all the profiles on this page by clicking the 3 lines button
(Again, you dont HAVE to delete all your profiles, Im just recommending it because well, its a pain in the butt to remember while profile is which)
Now that your phone is profile free. You can get the settings from
T-Mobile Customer Support to use the internet on your phone.
Step Three (Getting Web Settings from T-Mobile)
- Call T-Mobile Tech Support
- Tell the operator:
Say that: You want to setup your internet on your phone and you just
need the settings on your phone to access the internet
- T-Mobile Customer Support will send you a text message to your cellphone with all the data settings
- Accept the file on your phone
Then it will ask for a code, the representative will provide it
- After that, the rep will ask to re-open the browser and change the profile settings. He'll walk you through it.
- Reboot the phone by turning it off, taking out the battery and sim card.
- Reattach the sim card, add the battery, return the cover, turn on phone.
- Launch Web Browser, it should work.
Step 4: Installing Motorola Phone Tools on your PC/Laptop
- On your Laptop, Unzip motorola phone tools
- Install it
You might get a warning under Windows Vista, but install the drivers
anyways.
Step 5: Prepping the Phone As A USB Modem
- On your Phone, Tap the Setup Icon
- Tap USB Mode on the menu
There are two options, Modem, Mass Storage
- Tap Modem radio button
- Tap Save
- Now Tap the top left corner button to bring up all the menu icons
- Tap the Modem Icon
Modem screen appears. It should say USB Modem Status: Not connected.
- Check the Auto Launch
- Tap the X on the bottom right corner of the screen
Step 6: Last Step to turn the phone into a USB Modem
- Run Motorola Phone Tools on your PC/Laptop
- Plug the USB Cable into the Laptop/PC
- Plug the other end of the cable, the mini-USB connector into the A1200
- Continue to the main page of the Motorola Phone Tool Application
- Click Internet on the left side of the application
- Click the large connect button on the application
And thats it. You can use the phone as a wireless modem.
I hope that helps. It took me a while to figure it out, but I did it.
I hope this eases the frustrating into turning the A1200 into a USB modem.
Good luck!
- U
