Thread: Internet over Motorola A1200 on Ubuntu 8.10

Default Internet over Motorola A1200 on Ubuntu 8.10

    Hey every1...

I've just installed new Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop and I can say only good things about it. Now, they added sooo many options I couldnt even dream of. One of those options were native support for EZX and other GSM phones.

Now, I have a little problem in configuring my motorola to be modem for this system... I can use a standard dialup but it's far too expensive. What I want is a GPRS connection.

Now I know how to set up GPRS connection under windows but ubuntu is quite different and handles most of the things automatically.

I was wondering if someone had expirience with this kind of things already.

    If so, please share it

If your question was to connect from your PC to internet through MING yes you can use your MINGs WAP service as a internet connection. I am using this method on my laptop. You can connect either using USB cable or Bluetooth (whichever suites you best). But using home internet connection to surf on you phone... hardly, but it's not impossible.

    Connecting through USB:
In this case you need to set your motorola usb mode to Modem. Then download and install motorola usb drivers (I can provide you with ones am using). Create a simple dialup connection on your system (assuming you are using windows system) and when asked for phone number enter *99#. Leave username and password fields blank. There's a possibility you'll need to enter advanced init string for a modem. If you need to enter it... got o control panel->phone and modem options, go to modems tab. Select your motorola and in newly opened window select Advanced tab... enter AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","apn_name","",0,0 (replace apn_name with name from your phone. That should be it.

    Connecting through Bluetooth:
Bluetooth is much simplier. Connect to you phones Dialup Gateway bluetooth service. Create connection to dial *99# and that should do the trick.

My expiriences are that battery drainage on laptop is far less when using USB mode and plus your phone is recharged. Also bluetooth connection is not stable as USB.

Now I know all this I wrote might be useless but I figure someone might need it so pls dont criticize me hehe..

Anyway I'll take a look just in case they gave some neat info I can use...

If I come up with something I'll let you know
