Mine allows that. Just click on the smart key (between the volume keys) and there'll be a camera option.

If you want to change the settings on it, though (normal/night mode, etc), you'll need to open the camera the normal way and make sure it's set up right. (I just turned mine on via the soft key and it came up in night mode. I opened the flip (which turned the camera off), turned the camera back on the normal way (and it came up in normal mode), turned it off, closed the flip, and turned it back on, and it was normal. Don't know why, though.

Also, the camera key on the right side of the phone (above the VR key) should work to turn the camera on when flip is closed, and in fact requires only 1 key press.

However, you can't do continuous shooting (holding down the camera key and it keeps taking pictures until either you let go or the phone/SD runs out of memory) while the flip is closed, at least on my phone, and I haven't figured out how to easily adjust the zoom and brightness while the flip is closed.
