    Default Q: Font dilemma - Opera V.S. reboot, is there a solution?

    I've been trying to resolve this for weeks now - In order to run Opera Mini Beta 2 you need (on my version of FW 24xp) to install a font file. If you do that on my phone, Opera works perfectly. However, IF you install any other font after turning on the phone, and then try to connect to your computer in USB mode, the phone hangs. If I power off the phone to reset the fonts to the default, I can then connect to the PC with NO problems.

    Someone indicated that there is a way to re-install the Original fonts for the Ming in a permanent way. I tried every way I could and have NOT been able to do that. Can someone, maybe BlackHawk tell me if it is indeed possible to re-install the original font file for the Ming which on my phone DOES work with Opera AND also allows connection to my PC??

    If it is, then we can make a procedure for everyone to eliminate permanently the problem with Opera and connecting to the PC. Please, if ANYONE has any idea how to resolve this, I would be more than grateful!!!

    [thanks to chandru for this information]
    * connect the phone to comp in mass storage
    * access the .system/java/card registry
    * take a backup of card registry (for safety)
    * open the card registry n change Group ID = root and User ID = root (both have 'ezx' as default which need to be changed to 'root')
    * save the changes
    * disconnect the phone
    * create a directory called 'fonts' in ezxlocal usin linloader or eKonsole
    * copy ur original font (or whichever u like) to this directory
    * use 'apply font' application to load the font
    * thats it ! no more need to reboot before connectin to PC n the font gets set permanently irrespective of the reboot !

    I really appreciate you posting this solution, unfortunately for me it didn't work. I followed the instructions precisely - I modifed the registry file as you stated, changing the GroupIDs and UserIDs to root and saved those changes. I did assume you meant ALL GroupIDs and UserIDs - nothing else made sense to me.

    I then created the fonts directory in \ezxlocal\ and copied the amcsl.ttf original font file (that I got from a thread) to that directory using eKonsole. I then installed the same font using ApplyFont, but of course I installed the one in the SD directory because I can't access the phone's memory directly without eKonsole nor with ApplyFont.

    I then rebooted, but the phone returned to a default font that is slightly different from the amcsl.ttf font and Opera still fails to load (it begins gathering info. on the font and then fails).

    I double checked to see that the amcsl.ttf font is in fact in the \ezxlocal\fonts\ directory on the phone using eKonsole and it is there. I also double checked the modified registry file and it now has all the Group and User IDs set to root.

    So maybe it's my FW version or maybe Chandru can tell me what I did wrong.

    Regardless, I really appreciate the effort.

    haven't u installed an apllication called ''my stuff'' which can access the phone files directly on phone ?
    install it, go to ezxlocal n directly apply font from there

    oh! a mistake !
    changin the user ID n group ID of 'linloader' to ''root'' is just enough n not needed for other applications
    missed this out while typin the first reply

    Thank you for the info. about Mystuff. I installed it and used it to applyfonts to the font file on the phone's memory (\exzlocal\fonts\amcsl.ttf), no problem. It installed and I can now connect my MING via USB to my PC with no conflict. However, when I reboot the phone or turn it off, it reverts back to the "default"? font, whatever that is.

    So to use Opera, I still have to load the font file at least once. But at least this DID solve the problem with the USB connection, I only have to load the font file once when I first boot the phone and after doing so I still access my PC AND Opera. Thanks again and if you know how to make this font load "permanent", let me know!

    Unfortunately I don't remember my Unix. Using eKonsole, I tried to "mv" the amcsl.ttf file from the SD card to \usr\language\fonts\ directory (where the AMCSL.TTF file already resides) and had no luck.

    I got no error, but it's not doing it. So, I tried to change permissions on the file itself and its directory, and its parent directory which I WAS able to do. So basically starting with \usr all the way down to the file itself, I gave full permissions (rwxrwxrwx) and then tried to copy the file again from the SD card (after changing its permissions also). Still no luck. I can't remember if uppercase letters in a filename are significant - I tried to rename (using mv) the file on the SD to uppercase but that didn't work either. I did that because the file in the phone's memory is all uppercase.

    The point is, I was NOT able to copy the file from the SD card to the phone's memory, overwriting the \usr\language\fonts\AMCSL.TTF file. So if there's a way to do it, I would appreciate any help.

    Yes the file has to be in Upper case in phone
    even i renamed sum TTF file to AMCSL.TTF and ran a lin script to replace the default fonts but witout luck ! i guess its not all that easy
    i dont know how to change permissions to write to usr directory through eKonsole but since u know it see if this is possible :
    [NOT SURE if this is possible to u too but if possible its a RISKY idea - plz dont curse me if sumthing goes wrong ]
    * unzip the attachements u get fonts directory wit AMSCL.TTF n fontdef.cfg
    * copy them to ur MMC
    * make a new directory in usr/language/ directory wit any name say 'test' (this is not possible to me due to permission thing)
    * copy the files on MMC into this folder
    * rename the usr/language/fonts/ to something else like usr/language/crap/
    * rename the usr/language/test to usr/language/fonts
    * if all this goes smoothly open `mystuff` usr/language n hold ur stylus on the `fonts` directory (u created) select rename and witout doing anything save it (this is just to force the phone recognize it)
    * SEE IF U CAN REMOVE THOSE DEFAULT FILES FROM usr/language/crap after takin a backup to the MMC (cus memory available for usr directory is not known n can become an issue while rebootin!!!!!!)
    * reboot the phone n see if it worked !

    I myself think this is a flop idea but if u could tell the way to change the permissions i can try it on my cel n say if it worked ! n if phone gets bricked flashing is no problem to me
