Thread: INFO: Using MGMaps on A1200 Ming - what worked for me

  1. Default INFO: Using MGMaps on A1200 Ming - what worked for me

Thanks for all the previous posts for instructions.. after several days where my feeble brain struggled with this, here's what worked for me:

Install Active Perl software on computer
    Download MapTileCacher.pl to computer
run the script as described in previous posts to get map tiles(I chose to use 32 tiles per file when prompted)

    Downloaded mgmaps.jad
    downloaded mgmaps.jar
copied both to my TransFlash memory on the phone

FRom the phone, ran the mgmaps.jad file
Installed App to TransFlash card NOT the PHONE(this is required)

Copied the MGMapsCache folder from computer to the TransFlash memory
Edited the registry.txt file (located in .system\java\DownloadApps\MIDletxxxxx directory)
    Edited the file with WordPad
My registry.txt file looks as follows:

    Jar-Path: /mmc/mmca1/.system/java/DownloadApps/MIDlet20002/Files/mgmaps.jar
    Jad-Path: /mmc/mmca1/.system/java/DownloadApps/MIDlet20002/Files/mgmaps.jad
    Perm-Path: /mmc/mmca1/.system/java/DownloadApps/MIDlet20002/permfile.txt
    Suite-Icon: /mmc/mmca1/.system/java/DownloadApps/MIDlet20002/Files/suiteicon.png
    DRM-Mode: Allowed
    Is-Trusted: 1
    Jar-URL: mgmaps.jar
    Description: Mobile GMaps
    Domain: Manufacturer
    Signer-Name:
    Mot-JavaVM-Heapsize: 0
    Delete-Notify:
    Num-MIDlets: 1
    MIDlet-1: MGMaps, /mmc/mmca1/.system/java/DownloadApps/MIDlet20002/Files/MIDlet-1.png, com.mgmaps.ui.MGMaps
    MIDlet-Info-URL: http://www.mgmaps.com
    Prefer-Connection-Profile:Rogers

Note: the only parts I had to edit were:
    DRM-Mode: Allowed
    Is-Trusted: 1
    Domain: Manufacturer

Save the registry file and get back on the phone.
Open Application Explorer on the phone, hold down the stylus on Mobile Gmaps application and choose Manage > Permissions. Leave everything unchanged and save the configuration (Note: this step allows you to use the Browse button when setting the location of your stored maps in the MGMaps program, otherwise the Browse won't work and the app cannot access the map tile files)

Open the application and goto Settings > Map Browsing.
Enable Stored Maps and Offline Mode
Browse to and select your MGMapsCache folder on your Transflash card.
    Save the settings.

Go back into Settings and goto Display.
Change your Coordinate Format settings to DD.ddddd (this is how google and yahoo display them and will make it easier to do the next step) Save the Display settings.
Click Menu > Goto > Enter one of the sets of coordinates that you used when running the Perl Scripts.. make sure to set the same zoom level as well.

Your maps may not show up right then. You will have to exit the program and start it again. Your maps should show up now.

    hope this helps

Couple questions as I've had some issues with this. What version of mgmaps did you download? THe newest generic? Please be specific.

Also, what file type are the maps that are compatible with mgmaps on the phone. Is it .mgm?

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I have added link to this thread in FAQ sticky so info does not get lost.

Yield, I used the newest version for Generic . It is version 1.37.02.

The map files that were created were .mgm files. Each file contains many map tiles. I downloaded some google maps and yahoo maps and they all downloaded as .mgm files which is what the Perl script creates them as. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I wanted someone to confirm that. I'll try uninstalling it and seeing if I can get the newer version to work again.

I tried a zillion things that didn't work and I finally uninstalled, deleted all files from the phone and started over. That's when it finally worked using the process that I documented above. If you are having trouble at any step I strongly suggest what you said you are going to do: start over from scratch.

@ashwinrulez: you cannot add two maps in the same folder. For the pointer file will be different.

I tried doing it with a 0-16 map of bangalore, 0-8 map of inda, 0-5 map of world, and it failed miserably. Nothing worked.

So now i keep them in separate folders. Bit of a pain to change it everytime, but it's still ok.

Default About the "Mobile tracking" feature of MGMaps...

Just want to ask a question.

Has anyone tried the "mobile tracking" feature of the application? It's accesible via Menu > GPS > Mobile tracking. I am 95% sure that this involves identifying your position on a map by processing your cellphone signal coverage. Am I correct? I DID try it but with no luck... Activated the "position" marks on the Display settings but still, no pointers would show up. Somebody help

    Great application, by the way!
